Syria and Jordan Sign Agreement to Purchase Natural Gas to Enhance the Stability of Syria’s Energy SystemThe Syrian Arab Republic and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan signed today, at the Ministry of Energy building in Damascus, an agreement for the purchase of natural gas. The agreement was concluded between the Syrian Petroleum Company and Jordan’s National Electric Power Company, with the aim of securing quantities of natural gas through Jordanian territory to support Syria’s electrical energy system.The agreement was signed in the presence of the Syrian Minister of Energy, Eng. Mohammad Al-Bashir, and the Jordanian Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Dr. Saleh Al-Kharabsheh. It was signed on behalf of the Syrian side by Eng. Hisham Al-Saleh, Vice President for the Gas Sector at the Syrian Petroleum Company, and on behalf of the Jordanian side by Dr. Sufian Al-Battayneh, Director General of the National Electric Power Company, in the presence of the Jordanian Ambassador to Syria, Dr. Sufian Al-Qudah.Minister Al-Bashir affirmed that the agreement represents an important step within the government’s efforts to enhance fuel supplies to the electricity sector and improve the reliability of power supply, especially in light of the challenges faced by the energy sector in recent years.He also explained that the agreement contributes to diversifying gas sources and increasing the operational efficiency of power generation plants, which will positively reflect on the level of services provided to citizens.For his part, Minister Al-Kharabsheh stated that the agreement stipulates supplying Syria with approximately 4 million cubic meters of natural gas per day, equivalent to 140 million cubic feet, thereby supporting the stability of Syria’s electricity system.Al-Kharabsheh noted that supply operations have already commenced as of January 1, 2026, with quantities ranging between 30 and 90 million cubic feet per day, through the regasification vessel chartered from the Egyptian side (Energos Force), currently docked at the Port of Aqaba until the end of March.He added that the National Electric Power Company has begun procedures to charter a new Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) to replace the current vessel, ensuring continuity of gas supply in line with operational requirements.This agreement comes within the framework of strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two brotherly countries in the field of energy, in a manner that meets part of Syria’s natural gas needs to support the electricity sector.#Syrian_Arab_Republic#Ministry_of_Energy
