Rehabilitation of the Al-Hasana and Al-Shabruniya Canals to Enhance Agricultural Irrigation and Serve Approximately 20,000 Beneficiaries in the Homs Countryside
The Homs Directorate of Water Resources, in cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), continues to carry out rehabilitation work on the Al-Hasana and Al-Shabruniya canals—both branches of the Southern Al-Kabir River. These canals irrigate approximately 750 hectares of agricultural land and serve around 20,000 beneficiaries.
The project includes the rehabilitation of concrete sections, the construction of box culverts, and the installation of lateral water intakes. These measures aim to improve the efficiency of the canals, regulate water flow, minimize water loss, and ensure that irrigation water reaches the targeted agricultural lands.
This initiative is part of an ongoing collaboration between the General Authority for Water Resources and the FAO, focused on rehabilitating irrigation infrastructure, supporting the revival of agricultural activity, and enabling farmers to cultivate their land—thereby positively impacting agricultural production and local livelihoods.
The Ministry of Energy extends its gratitude and appreciation to the staff of the Homs Directorate of Water Resources and to the supporting organizations for their efforts in rehabilitating these canals, which facilitate the irrigation of agricultural land and serve the farmers of the region.
